A SE Asian moment in SF

As I was standing at the Muni stop with all of my luggage I heard a car honk a few times. I finally looked over. A cabbie asked, “Need a ride?” I shook my head, “No, thanks.”

A few seconds later I realized that exchange wasn’t normal in SF.

Map dorking

Look! Maps on my blog. I’m trying to decide if it’s worth going back
now to put in points for my bike trip, or if I should wait until
GeoPress version 2.5 comes out so I can put the daily paths.

Plus, I found an open source program that does bike routing in two
cities in Germany. If only I spoke German, even a little. It will be
interesting to look at, but very hard to understand.

While looking at open source GIS programs I found this:

“AutoREALM is a Free GNU mapping software (a “cartographer”) that can
design maps of castles, cities, dungeons and more. AutoREALM is
generally used by Role-playing Game practicants who enjoy doing their
own maps. But it could fits the needs of other people.”

Dorks!

Dinner at alembic with Death and Dave and Jenny was great. Posh
cocktails and amazingly good small plates. Death wasn’t impressed with
his Pisco Sour, but I liked it better than the ones he had made in
October because it wasn’t as sweet.

Transportation woes. Biking is so much less frustrating than mass
transit because there is no waiting. I hate waiting, especially when
I’m running late. When you’re biking you can pedal harder, using the
adrenaline. When you’re waiting, you can only stew, fidget or talk to
total strangers. I did all three. I was pleasantly surprised by the
pleasant small talk of other San Franciscans, even if one of them did
call me sweetie as he boarded his bus.

I ended up having to run for the train back to SF. It was pulling into
the station as Brian drove into the parking lot. Exciting.

I had the full Silicon Valley experience. I sat in a coffeehouse and
talked to someone about starting a company and I got a tour of
Google. Then I ran into Hardpack in the Google cafeteria, even though
he’s working for them in Pittsburgh.

Violet Julia Tivol is pretty cute, though looks nothing like Brian or
Marcy. Mostly fun to play with. Not too fidgety or screamy.
